Who runs this site
BritishCalendar.co.uk is run by Tommy Derngren as a private individual and has been online since 2013. It is not connected to any government body.
What the calendar shows
The calendar covers 1950 to 2050, with a page for every month and every year. It shows the bank holidays for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, including substitute days, the number of working days, week numbers, the phases of the moon, the equinoxes and solstices, when British Summer Time starts and ends, and Leap Day. Week numbers follow ISO 8601: week 1 is the week with the first Thursday of the year.
Where the data comes from
- Bank holidays are calculated from the rules (the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 and royal proclamations for one-off days) and checked against gov.uk. Future years can change if a one-off bank holiday is announced, such as for a coronation or a jubilee.
- British Summer Time comes from the IANA time zone database (tzdata), the same data computers and phones use.
- The phases of the moon and the times of the equinoxes and solstices come from calculated astronomical tables.
- The text about each month comes from English Wikipedia and is used under the CC BY-SA 3.0 licence, with a link to the article on every month page.
How the pages are made
All month and year pages are pre-generated, which keeps the site fast and reliable. The front page also shows today's date and week number.
